These last few months have been filled with achievements that not only help serve the community but put Bedford Borough on track to be a better place to live, work and raise a family.
So, what has been happening?
- The Bedford Borough Customer Hub has officially opened its doors and will serve as an in-person one-stop shop for residents needing face-to-face assistance with Council Services. The Hub will also offer digital literacy courses for anyone needing to brush up on their digital skills. This will ensure residents who prefer a more personal touch receive the support they need and achieves my wider goal of putting the public back at the heart of our services.
- A key aim of mine when entering office last year was to see critical infrastructure finally being delivered for the residents of Bedford Borough. We have made incredible progress that has seen the Wixams Train Station get back on track. With support from Resident Associations and Parish Councils, we have entered an agreement with Network Rail to construct a two-platform station with spades in the ground on the 27 August 2024. This is a significant investment in our borough’s infrastructure, and it will significantly improve connectivity for residents.
- We are doing everything we can to regenerate and rejuvenate our beloved Town Centre and put Bedford back in business. Earlier this year we acquired the iconic former Debenhams site which represents a significant strategic move for the Conservative administration and marks the beginning of a bold new vision for our town centre. Right now the ground floor is available for rent by commercial occupiers for two to three years until the wider redevelopment plans begin, so watch the space.
- The Jubilee Skate Park refurbishment has been completed which sees another vital public asset improved. This demonstrates the Conservative administration’s commitment to guaranteeing the public has high-quality recreational facilities building on the significant investment seen in our Tennis Courts and Leisure Centres.
- I was honoured to attend the War Memorial on the Embankment to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden to pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in this campaign.
- I am immensely proud of our flood team who have been working round the clock to assist residents and deal with any flooding that has occurred in the Borough.
- The Universal Project continues to chug along in the background. I have made it my mission to ensure this Council does everything in its power to get this incredible investment secured for our Borough. We have been working ceaselessly with the Government and Universal themselves. I took John McReynolds, Senior Vice President of External Affairs from Universal Destinations & Experiences around our wonderful Town Centre, showing him the wonderful hospitality and fantastic business community in our Town. We also have two Council staff (with support from the whole of the Council) working full-time on this project. I am so proud of the progress being made and as I have always said – even better days are on the horizon for residents of Bedford Borough.
